6 Things to Know before your Fall Family Photo Session

Fall is gorgeous and definitely the most popular time for family photos. Photographers are packing in the sessions with the fall colors so everyone can get their holiday cards done, put gorgeous images on their walls and get prints to give as gifts.

These photo sessions should not be stressful, but for many they can be. I'm here to give you some insight, some knowledge and some hints to make it less stressful, more fun and help you get the images you want!
1.  Make sure everyone is well-rested and well-fed. When we are tired and hungry, we certainly are not our happiest selves, which makes for a frustrating photo session for all! Be sure everyone (including Mom & Dad) gets some food before the session and sleeps well the night before!

2. Coordinate your clothing, but don't completely match.  Gone are the days of completely matching outfits for photo sessions. You want to look natural, but not clashing or matching. Pick a color scheme (or two coordinating colors schemes!) and choose different shades in that scheme. You can always choose an accessory to bring a pop of color! Most photographers have ideas for you. If you need inspiration, I keep a Pinterest board devoted to clothing ideas!
 3. Have FUN with your family during the session. Joy, laughter and the raw emotion that comes from interactions with your loved ones leads to the best photos. These will be the photos that make you smile ear-to-ear when you see them hanging on your walls. Don't be surprised when your photographer asks you to cuddle, tell stories, tickle, joke around, or pick your child up to toss them in the air. All of these things will bring out those beautiful natural smiles.
4. Bring snacks and bribes for the kids. It might seem silly, but it WORKS! Kids listen so well and take direction for a few minutes because they are promised a snack. I've also had families bring dolls, lovies...etc. to help get kiddos to cooperate. I shot one entire session having a doll sticking out of my camera bag. I had fun with it and the kid was super excited to smile for her doll!
5. Leave plenty of time to get ready before your session. We have all been in the position of rushing to get out the door, grabbing everything we think we can remember that we need, and feeling totally flustered and rushed. You definitely do not want your photos to feel stressed and rushed, so plan to get ready a bit ahead of time. Get ready before your kids. After everyone is ready, take a deep breath, make sure you have everything you need and then head off for some family photo fun!

6. Don't wait until November to start thinking about booking a family photo session. Fall truly is the busiest time for family photographers. Nothing would be worse than putting off booking your session and then finding out your favorite photographer is completely booked through Fall. Send them a message early (how about now?) to make sure you get a session.

I'm celebrating the joys of family and childhood every day. Reach out so we can celebrate yours beautifully.
